2023 Volvo V90

2023 Volvo V90 Wagon The standard Volvo V90 has sadly been discontinued for the 2022 model year. However, the more powerful Volvo V90 Cross Country with additional ride height and standard all-wheel-drive remains.

It excels in safety as you’d expect for a Volvo, plus it has a unique style and luxurious interior with roomy seating, but the cargo area is a bit cramped for a wagon.

The 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country is more affordable than rivals from Audi and Mercedes-Benz, but still a bit pricey, and misses some of the standard features for 2022, such as a heated steering wheel and Wi-Fi hotspot, making it a questionable value.

This rugged wagon competes in a niche segment of the luxury car world against the Audi A6 Allroad and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain wagon. One could also argue that it competes with the Subaru Outback, which has more space and a much lower starting price but isn’t quite as luxurious as a Volvo.

2023 Volvo V90 Review: Volvo V90 New Model 2023

New Volvo V90 Cross Country 2023 Start with an attractive mid-size luxury sedan, then add plenty of cargo space—that’s the Volvo V90. This beautiful station wagon is based on the S90 sedan and has been on sale since the 2018 model year.

2023 Volvo V90

Offered only as a special order model, the 2023 Volvo V90 has been a slow seller. The standard 2023 Volvo V90 has been discontinued for 2022, leaving the high-riding Cross Country model behind.

  • Equal parts stylish and practical
  • Beautiful and luxurious interior
  • New Android-based infotainment interface
  • Non-Cross-Country Model discontinued
  • Standard mild-hybrid B6 powertrain
  • Android-based infotainment interface
  • USB Type-C port replaces type-A
  • Updated driver assistance sensors
  • A built-in compass, headlight wash nozzle, and heated steering wheel removed

There’s not much to criticize about the V90 Cross Country. Maybe the ride quality could be a little smoother and the cabin could be a little quieter, but that hardly detracts from the overall great experience. Where to start?

As a large wagon, the V90 Cross Country is very practical. Volvo packs the car cleverly, giving it plenty of cargo space and organizers to accommodate many different sizes.

Passenger space is ample, although there are no rear-facing third-row seats like old Volvo wagons or the ones you’ll find in Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagons.

Regardless, passengers on the V90 Cross Country will have no shortage of luxury appointments. The cabin is beautifully appointed and crafted, with new technology features added this year to modernize the experience.

Also new this year is the lightweight Volvo V90 Hybrid 2023 B6 powertrain, which upgrades the already capable super and turbocharged engine.

Since the standard 2023 Volvo V90 wagon was discontinued for this year and SUVs are selling far more of it, the fate of the V90 Cross Country seems unclear. Shame, as this is an excellent vehicle for sedans and SUVs of similar intent. Get one while you can.

Volvo V90 2023 Model: 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country Hybrid

Driving the Volo V90 Cross Country is more exciting than the average luxury SUV but not nearly as sporting as a true luxury sports sedan.

Quite agile in narrow corners, but this is generally a car that prioritizes comfort over sporty handling. It becomes even more comfortable with the available adaptive air suspension.

The single-engine option in this car is a 2.0-liter inline-4 with a turbocharger, electric supercharger, and a 48V mild hybrid system.

Compared to its main rivals from Audi and Mercedes-Benz, the Volvo is less powerful but slightly more fuel-efficient. This is a worthwhile trade-off if efficiency is more important to you than performance.

The off-road capability of the V90 Cross Country is quite good, thanks to its 8.3-inch ground clearance and standard all-wheel drive.

Don’t expect to do super technical rock climbing, but that’s not what this wagon is all about. This is a premium car that is great on snowy roads and for the occasional off-road adventure.

Volvo V90 R Design 2023

Volvo has released photos and details of the S90 and V90 R-Design editions, including cosmetic enhancements and an enhanced suspension system.

It’s the Volvo equivalent for BMW’s M Sport, Jaguar R-Sport, Mercedes AMG Sport, and Audi’s S-Line trim, where the sporty elements of the top-tier performance model are used to bring the ‘cook’ version to life.

The R-Design is distinguished by a distinctive grille pattern, different lower grille openings featuring integrated fog lamps, a front spoiler, and more tantalizing alloys than the base S/V90 alloy wheels.

The S90/V90 is the Swedish brand’s attempt to steal the luxury crown from the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Powered by a massive cash injection from Chinese parent company Geely, these cars feature the same Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) of the critically acclaimed XC90.

They also feature a twin-charged engine option and a possible 2.0-liter ‘triple-boost’ 336kW for future Polestar models.

2023 Volvo V90 Specs

The V90 Cross Country gets a new powertrain for 2022. Dubbed the B6, it builds on last year’s T6’s 2.0-liter supercharged and turbocharged I-4 by adding a 48-volt mild-hybrid electric system. Horsepower is down to 295 from 316, but torque is up to 310 lb-ft from 295.

2023 Volvo V90

That can help improve off-the-line acceleration, potentially resulting in a slightly faster 0-60 time than the 6.5 seconds we previously measured.

However, it does not necessarily improve fuel economy. The EPA rates the 2022 V90 Cross Country at 22/29 mpg city/highway, while last year’s non-hybrid model delivers 20/30 mpg.

Comparing the V90 to the V90 Cross Country is a bit of a moot, considering that you can only buy the final model in 2022. You may still wonder how off-road-ready it is compared to similar Volvos.

Ground clearance on the V90 Cross Country measures 8.3 inches, giving it more room to get through obstacles than the standard 6.1-inch V90. However, the XC90 is still slightly taller, with 8.8-inch ground clearance.

Volvo’s focus on safety is demonstrated in the excellent crash test scores that every vehicle in its range achieves, including the V90 Cross Country.

Although the 2022 model has not yet been evaluated, it will likely carry the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating it earned last year. NHTSA has never tested the V90 in any form.

The V90 Cross Country comes with driver assistance and active safety features. These include front and rear automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear traffic warning, adaptive cruise control, and fixed lane assist.

This is the same feature that was included before, but the 2022 model receives a new set of sensors for this system that can improve its functionality.

2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country Review

Despite the raised suspension and SUV-like body covering, the 2022 Volvo V90 Cross Country is a station wagon, albeit with slightly more capabilities than your average car.

Not only capable of handling some mild off-road situations, but the Cross Country also offers a luxurious cabin upholstered in smooth materials, soft leather, and genuine wood trim. These and other traits helped us include it on our Editors’ Choice list.

All models are powered by a 295-hp turbocharged-and-supercharged four-cylinder engine with a 48-volt hybrid system and come standard with all-wheel drive. Volvo’s safety legacy is also evident in this model, with many standard driver assistance including a semi-autonomous driving mode.

Love the look of the V90 Cross Country but want a smaller size? Check out the V60 Cross Country which we reviewed separately.

  • HIGHEST
Deluxe cabin, attractive inside and out design, cargo-friendly body style.
  • LOWEST
The new infotainment is less intuitive, other carriages have more cargo space, only offered in the Cross Country guise from this year.
  • DECISION
For buyers who want the practicality of an SUV with the look and feel of a luxury car, the V90 Cross Country is an attractive choice.

Cross Country is switching to a new B6 powertrain for 2022, which adds a 48-volt Volvo V90 Hybrid 2023 system to its familiar turbocharged-and-supercharged four-cylinder engine but has 21 horsepower less than previous turbocharged-and-supercharged four-cylinder cars.

We haven’t tried this engine in the 2023 Volvo V90 but we did a quick test drive in the XC60 SUV and found the powertrain to be good despite the lower 295-hp rating.

Elsewhere, the V90 Cross Country inherits Volvo’s new Google-based infotainment system, which we found to be an improvement over the older Sensus Connect system in some ways, but a little less intuitive to use in practice.

A new USB-C port is also standard. Unfortunately, the regular 2023 Volvo V90 has been discontinued for 2022, leaving the raised and sturdy Cross Country the only option.

All 2023 Volvo V90 B6 Cross Country models come with a B6 powertrain and all-wheel drive, and most of the features a wagon would want come standard, including semi-autonomous driving technology, a large sunroof, digital gauge display, genuine leather seats, and dual zones. automatic climate control.

2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country Specs

The B6 engine is a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a 48-volt hybrid system that produces 295 horsepower. Acceleration is quite fast and the big Volvo wagon managed to run 6.4 seconds to 60 mph on our test track.

The Mercedes-Benz E450 train, a rival to the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country, proved even faster, hitting 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds. While the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country doesn’t sound too sporty, it’s agile and offers impressive cornering capabilities.

However, the ride was tougher than we expected from a big luxury car. The brakes are strong even though the pedals feel springy, and in our 70 to 0 mph braking test, the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country stopped at 168 feet.

2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country B6 AWD

Volvo’s biggest wagon debuted as a 2017 model and is getting some important updates for 2022. The wagon now runs the Android Automotive OS infotainment system, with Google features integrated, even when your phone isn’t connected.

2023 Volvo V90

It also gets a new mild-hybrid powertrain for added fuel efficiency. Finally, the standard 2023 Volvo V90 has been discontinued, leaving only the more powerful Cross Country version.

We spent a day testing the new powertrain and Cross Country infotainment technology on our way across New York and New Jersey. For 2022, the wagon is only available in B6 trim with standard all-wheel drive.

Pricing starts at $56,295 (including a mandatory destination fee of $1,095), but our test vehicle had options such as a heads-up display, 360-degree camera system, and heated rear seats, bringing the price tested to $68,440.

The new mild-hybrid powertrain for 2022 consists of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric turbocharger and supercharger, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a small electric motor.

Dubbed the B6, it produces 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. That’s 21 hp less than the 2021 petrol-only Volvo V90 T6 2023 powertrain, but torque increases by 15 lb-ft. You also get standard all-wheel drive.

Despite having some electric assists, the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country B6 isn’t a Toyota Prius. The motor can only provide 13 hp in a short time, so it can’t move the car by itself. Instead, it replaces the conventional starter motor, enabling a more aggressive engine start-stop system.

It also delivers a drop of torque when pulling away from a stop, making for smoother acceleration. The goal is to improve fuel economy, without compromising the driving experience.

With a claimed 6.1 seconds of zero to 60 mph, the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country B6 is 1.0 seconds slower than rival Audi and Mercedes cars, based on the manufacturer’s specifications. However, that’s not much of a problem in real-world driving.

Based on our experience, large wagons have no difficulty accelerating when stopped or overtaking on the highway. We were also impressed by the mix of electric and petrol power. Acceleration feels more linear compared to the old T6 powertrain.

2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country Canada

Volvo is bringing its big wagon back to Canada, and this time hopefully it stays

The 2023 Volvo V90 wagon is eye-catching and beautiful. Since it was announced for the 2017 model year, it has captured my imagination and stole my heart every time I see it in my driveway.

There’s only one problem: very few people can be convinced to buy it.

My real estate agent friend is a perfect example. He was looking to replace his old sedan around that time and had a list of desirable traits in a new vehicle: classy but not pretentious, good in the snow, and something he could get his less agile dog to do with a minimum of weight lifting. But no minivan.

He had no idea what he was missing, and neither did anyone else. Volvo is quietly discontinuing the V90 in Canada for 2020, and many people never notice.

Now, the 2023 Volvo V90 is back for 2022. It’s only sold in one configuration, but pretty much everything else about it is perfect for Canada. Maybe, this time, it will stick.

First good point? This is the returning 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country, which comes with a ground clearance of 20.4 centimeters, better than what you’ll find in some SUVs. That’s a far cry from the 15.3 centimeters of ground clearance in the standard V90.

Between that, the plastic cladding on the wheel holes, and standard all-wheel drive, it shouldn’t be hard to convince anyone that this car is as well equipped for the Canadian winter as any SUV.

2023 Volvo V90 Wagon

For the area of the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country, some SUVs simply offer more capacity, especially when equipped with third-row seats (such as the Volvo XC90).

Cargo space (behind the first/second/third row):

  • 2022 V90 Cross Country: 69.0/19.8/NA cubic feet
  • 2022 XC90: 80.3/49.6/21.8 cubic feet

Legroom (first/second/third row):

  • 2022 V90 Cross Country: 42.2/35.9/NA inch
  • 2022 XC90: 40.9/37.0/31.9 inches

Headroom (first/second/third row):

  • 2022 V90 Cross Country: 37.8/37.7/NA inches
  • 2022 XC90: 38.9/38.5/36.3 inches

2023 Volvo V90 Tech

Each 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country is equipped with a 12.3-inch screen and a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. For 2022 it runs a new Android-based user interface, which aims to be more intuitive and capable than Volvo’s previous in-house Census system.

It works with Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity, but Apple CarPlay isn’t available yet — future system updates may change that.

Also new this year is the switch from USB Type-A to Type-C ports on the front row. The standard audio system has 10 speakers, while the premium 14-speaker Harman Kardon and 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen setups are on the list.

The head-up view and 360-degree parking camera system are other premium technology offerings.

Volvo V90 2023 Interior

The 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country has stiff competition when it comes to interior quality, but it is ahead of its German rivals. It is a beautiful interior with a high-end design and luxurious materials.

2023 Volvo V90

Standard interior features include leather upholstery, digital gauge cluster, wireless charging, and more. It will be better if you upgrade with the Advanced Package or Lounge Package.

The seating space on the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country is ample and can comfortably accommodate up to four adults — or five in a pinch. While cargo space is better than that of a Volvo S90 sedan, it’s not very roomy for a wagon of this size.

If you’re shopping for a wagon because you want a lot of cargo space, you’d be better off with an Audi A6 Allroad or a Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon. The Subaru Outback has significantly more cargo space than the Volvo, although the car is a bit smaller.

Apart from Mercedes-Benz, no company makes luxury interiors better than Volvo. The Swedish brand’s warm and comfortable cabin offers a compelling argument for its carriage’s premium price. They offer high-quality embellishments, elegant designs, and substantive technology.

The dual-tone leather on the steering wheel, textured knobs, beautiful exposed porous wood, artistic speaker enclosures, vertically oriented tablet-style infotainment screen—all help to separate Volvo vehicles from their packaging.

Like most carriages, the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country offers plenty of interior space. However, it is not as efficient in the cargo-carrying department as Mercedes. Also can’t beat the Subaru Outback which isn’t fancy in that area. Mercedes and Subaru carry more luggage in the back of their backseat than Volvos.

With all seats folded, the V90 Cross Country houses 21 cases while the Outback has room for 22 and the E-class, 24.

2023 Volvo V90 Exterior

The 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country has an aesthetic that suits its personality as a luxurious yet sturdy wagon. It’s a fine execution of Volvo’s design language with its signature “Thor’s hammer” LED headlights and elegant body lines. The 8.3-inch ride height and smooth underbody cladding hint at its off-pavement cut.

The size of the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country is very similar to that of the Audi A6 Allroad and Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain wagon. It’s a little bigger than the Subaru Outback.

2023 Volvo V90

This provides more than enough power, but the Audi A6 Allroad wagon and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain have better performance figures.

Each 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country is equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

  • 2023 V90CC 2.0 liter turbocharged and supercharged mild-hybrid inline-4

The EPA says the V90 Cross Country with the new B6 powertrain should get 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route, the V90 Cross Country delivered 28 mpg. For more information on the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country’s fuel economy, visit the EPA website.
