There’s not much to criticize about the V90 Cross Country. Maybe the ride quality could be a little smoother and the cabin could be a little quieter, but that hardly detracts from the overall great experience. Where to start?

As a large wagon, the V90 Cross Country is very practical. Volvo packs the car cleverly, giving it plenty of cargo space and organizers to accommodate many different sizes.

Passenger space is ample, although there are no rear-facing third-row seats like old Volvo wagons or the ones you’ll find in Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagons.

Driving the Volo V90 Cross Country is more exciting than the average luxury SUV but not nearly as sporting as a true luxury sports sedan.

Quite agile in narrow corners, but this is generally a car that prioritizes comfort over sporty handling. It becomes even more comfortable with the available adaptive air suspension.

The single-engine option in this car is a 2.0-liter inline-4 with a turbocharger, electric supercharger, and a 48V mild hybrid system.

Compared to its main rivals from Audi and Mercedes-Benz, the Volvo is less powerful but slightly more fuel-efficient. This is a worthwhile trade-off if efficiency is more important to you than performance.

The off-road capability of the V90 Cross Country is quite good, thanks to its 8.3-inch ground clearance and standard all-wheel drive.

Don’t expect to do super technical rock climbing, but that’s not what this wagon is all about. This is a premium car that is great on snowy roads and for the occasional off-road adventure.

Volvo has released photos and details of the S90 and V90 R-Design editions, including cosmetic enhancements and an enhanced suspension system.

The V90 Cross Country gets a new powertrain for 2022. Dubbed the B6, it builds on last year’s T6’s 2.0-liter supercharged and turbocharged I-4 by adding a 48-volt mild-hybrid electric system. Horsepower is down to 295 from 316, but torque is up to 310 lb-ft from 295.

That can help improve off-the-line acceleration, potentially resulting in a slightly faster 0-60 time than the 6.5 seconds we previously measured.

However, it does not necessarily improve fuel economy. The EPA rates the 2022 V90 Cross Country at 22/29 mpg city/highway, while last year’s non-hybrid model delivers 20/30 mpg.

Comparing the V90 to the V90 Cross Country is a bit of a moot, considering that you can only buy the final model in 2022. You may still wonder how off-road-ready it is compared to similar Volvos.

Ground clearance on the V90 Cross Country measures 8.3 inches, giving it more room to get through obstacles than the standard 6.1-inch V90. However, the XC90 is still slightly taller, with 8.8-inch ground clearance.

Volvo’s focus on safety is demonstrated in the excellent crash test scores that every vehicle in its range achieves, including the V90 Cross Country.

Although the 2022 model has not yet been evaluated, it will likely carry the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating it earned last year. NHTSA has never tested the V90 in any form.

However, the ride was tougher than we expected from a big luxury car. The brakes are strong even though the pedals feel springy, and in our 70 to 0 mph braking test, the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country stopped at 168 feet.

Despite having some electric assists, the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country B6 isn’t a Toyota Prius. The motor can only provide 13 hp in a short time, so it can’t move the car by itself. Instead, it replaces the conventional starter motor, enabling a more aggressive engine start-stop system.

It also delivers a drop of torque when pulling away from a stop, making for smoother acceleration. The goal is to improve fuel economy, without compromising the driving experience.

With a claimed 6.1 seconds of zero to 60 mph, the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country B6 is 1.0 seconds slower than rival Audi and Mercedes cars, based on the manufacturer’s specifications. However, that’s not much of a problem in real-world driving.

Based on our experience, large wagons have no difficulty accelerating when stopped or overtaking on the highway. We were also impressed by the mix of electric and petrol power. Acceleration feels more linear compared to the old T6 powertrain.
