2023 Volvo XC40 The Volvo XC40 2023 is a subcompact luxury SUV with a huge reputation for comfort and safety, not to mention a price that undercuts direct rivals from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

We don’t expect any major changes to the 2023 Volvo XC40, except for new color and trim options. In last year’s model, Volvo made some adjustments to the standard and available items, such as making the power liftgate a standalone option and adding wireless smartphone charging to the top trim.

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is also available as an all-electric model called Recharge. We reviewed this version separately from the rest of the XC40 line.

The standard T4 powertrain, to use Volvo terminology, consists of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that sends 187 horsepower to the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic.

Performance is good for most driving needs, though we think a little extra power helps bring this little Volvo SUV to life.

That’s where the optional T5 powertrain comes in. It uses the same general powertrain but comes standard with all-wheel drive (AWD) and increases engine output to 248 horsepower. This adds more vibrancy to the 2023 Volvo XC40 and also has less of an impact on fuel economy.

Whichever engine you choose, the 2023 Volvo XC40 is extremely agile and easy to place on the road. It also has a smooth and quiet highway ride.

Keep in mind, the sport-tuned suspension and larger wheels of the R-Design trim add a level of firmness that some SUV buyers may like, but others may not.

The XC40’s interior is light and airy, there’s plenty of passenger space in both rows, and the materials used throughout the cabin feel luxurious but not stuffy.

Cargo space is a reasonable 27 cubic feet behind the rear seats. It’s not huge, but it’s competitive with other small luxury SUVs.

As you’d expect, the 2023 Volvo XC40 scores top marks in the crash test ratings conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and is equipped with a variety of active safety features that are installed as standard.

These include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, rear traffic warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beam headlights, road sign detection, lane guard assistance, and lane departure warning.

The 2023 Volvo XC40 is also available with semi-autonomous driving assistance called Pilot Assist.

A facelifted version of the popular Volvo XC40 2023 Review SUV has been revealed – but the company hasn’t told anyone about it yet.

Instead of staging a massive press campaign, Volvo has quietly released images of the new car, along with most of the specs and pricing information in its online configurator.

Prices start at £34,100 for the entry-level mild-hybrid petrol variant and £39,100 for the equivalent plug-in hybrid model.

Meanwhile, the cheapest version of the pure electric 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge starts at £43,550. Apart from the powertrain, the SUV lineup is separated into three specifications called Core, Plus, and Ultimate.

However, not all specifications will be available immediately – there is a waiting time of up to nine months for some variants in the SUV lineup. All-electric variants of the updated XC40, for example, won’t arrive at customers’ doors until the end of the year.

2023 XC40 Review will also introduce a more basic entry-level model called the 2023 Volvo XC40 Start once the Volvo XC40 Facelift 2023 model is properly launched.

It will have a starting price of £26,485 and will only be available with a 127bhp 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine and manual gearbox.

Standard equipment for the current cheapest Core 2023 Volvo XC40 variant includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, silver roof rails, rear parking sensors, and automatic windshield wipers.

Inside, buyers also get two-zone climate control, a wireless smartphone charger, a nine-inch infotainment system, and a 12-inch digital gauge cluster.

Since this is a Volvo, there is a lot of standard safety equipment as well. Shoppers get cruise control, lane-keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, adjustable speed control, and Volvo’s upcoming lane mitigation system, which helps prevent the car from crashing by automatically steering the car away from oncoming traffic.

The prices for the 2023 Volvo XC40 Plus start at £40,000. To that end, buyers get 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, gloss black roof rails, an electrically operated tailgate, front and rear parking sensors, a rear parking camera, and rearview mirrors that fold and heat up automatically.

The 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric model also received a slightly reworked blank grille like the C40 Recharge.

We don’t expect significant powertrain changes for the facelifted model, but we could see more electrification offerings locally.

This is in line with Volvo’s current plan to sell only all-electric models from 2030 onwards.

Currently in Australia, the 2023 Volvo XC40 is available with an internal combustion engine (ICE), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and all-electric powertrains.

The PHEV and All-electric Recharge variants are only available in one very specific trim level at the moment. In other markets, there are other trim levels available.

The 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric is only available with a two-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain that produces 300kW of power and 660Nm of torque, while single-motor variants are available in other markets.

That contrasts with its Polestar 2 platform counterpart, which offers both single-motor and dual-motor powertrains.

Previously published images and details by Volvo in western Europe suggest the 2023 Volvo XC40 will undergo an exterior update so that it is in line with its all-electric twin, the C40 Recharge, which is led by a new front end incorporating a more angular ‘Pixel’ LED.

The headlights and lower intakes are reshaped with T-shaped accents. The electric model gets a new frameless grille, which is the same as the C40.

Interestingly, Volvo’s website makes no mention of an available R-Design sport style package, indicating that it has been reduced to a facelift – although there are ‘Bright’ and ‘Dark’ packages which, as the name suggests, replace the front grille, window surrounds, roof rails. and rear bumper inserts between metallic and black.

Changes at the rear – if any – are not visible, although buyers can choose from new colors including metallic Sage Green and Fjord Blue, and a choice of new wheel designs up to 21 inches in diameter.

Inside, the 2023 Volvo XC40 mild-hybrid lineup joins the existing electric variant in adopting Volvo’s latest Android Automotive-based infotainment system – running through the existing 9.0-inch touchscreen – incorporating Google Maps, Google Assistant and various other Google functions. Interestingly, plug-in hybrids lag in Android systems.

New wool and suede upholstery options are available, in addition to the redesigned gear selector in most variants, which is used in conjunction with the Polestar 2.

Other features fitted for the flagship class (either carry-over or new) include electric front seats with driver seat memory, heated seats and steering wheel, 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, wireless charging, 360-degree camera, dual-zone climate control, and cabin pre-heating function.

As before, available safety systems include autonomous emergency braking, fixed lane assistance, traffic sign recognition, 360-degree camera, and automatic parking.

Under the hood, no changes have been made, with the 2023 Volvo XC40 carrying a range of mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric options from the 2021 model.

2023 Volvo XC40 Facelift

The updates to the 2023 Volvo XC40 are in line with the usual facelift tweaks. There’s a reshaped front bumper (which looks suspiciously like the same panels that graced the C40), slightly slimmer LED headlights, and a new rear bumper that lacks the exhaust vents seen on the older model. Now, the exhaust exits under the rear mosquito net, out of sight.

The cabin hasn’t changed much compared to the old model. The infotainment system is the same size as before but features new Google-backed software, which is part of the Swedish brand’s recent tie-up to the tech company.

The biggest change is a new trim piece for the passenger-side dashboard, which changes the design to specs.

The Volvo XC40 2023 has leaked online, and this mid-cycle update features only the most subtle visual changes.

The image was published earlier on the official website of the German Volvo and the car configurator and shared by the Spanish publication Cochespias.

The facelift is billed as a 2022 model year vehicle for overseas markets such as Germany, but this update will come under Under as a 2023 model year vehicle according to a Volvo Australia spokesperson.

The facelifted 2023 Volvo XC40 receives a redesigned front fascia with signature new daytime running lights and a redesigned fog lamp housing borrowed from the C40 Recharge, which is due to arrive locally in the second half of 2022.

2023 Volvo XC40 Engine

There are many engine options for the 2023 Volvo XC40 facelift. The cheapest option is the 127bhp 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol unit, which is only available with the most basic Start specifications.

On top of that, there are two 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engines, bearing the B3 and B4 logos. The former produces 161bhp and 265Nm of torque, while the latter has 194bhp and 300Nm of torque.

Both engines are equipped with a seven-speed automatic gearbox as standard, although the B4 model can be selected with a four-wheel drive.

Next up, it’s a plug-in hybrid. There are only two options to choose from here, and both are based on the same 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine as the base model.

The front-wheel-drive T4 variant gets 127bhp from the petrol engine and 81bhp from the electric motor, which Volvo says is enough to propel the 2023 Volvo XC40 from 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds.

The more expensive four-wheel-drive T5 model pairs the same electric motor with a 178bhp petrol engine. The extra power cuts the SUV’s 0-62mph time to 7.3 seconds.

Both plug-in hybrid powertrains have also claimed WLTP fuel economy figures of between 112.8-134.5 mpg, while emissions stand between 47-57g/km CO2 depending on trim.

Buyers are also offered two electric versions of the 2023 Volvo XC40. The front-wheel-drive model starts at 43,550lb and has an output of 228bhp and 330Nm of torque. It is powered by a 67kWh battery, which offers a maximum range of 264 miles.

The range-topping four-wheel-drive model has a starting price of £54,300. It’s backed by a larger 75kWh battery pack and gets a dual-motor electric powertrain with an output of 402bhp and 660Nm of torque.

It is the fastest accelerating model in the SUV lineup, with a 0-62mph time of 4.9 seconds. Maximum range claimed 259 miles

Is Volvo XC40 Fuel Efficient

When the updated 2023 Volvo XC40 model is introduced in India later this year, it will continue to be offered with a 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine producing 190 HP and 300 Nm of torque.

The motor will be mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

2023 Volvo XC40 Hybrid: Volvo XC40 2023 Spec

While both PHEV and full EV options are currently available in Australia, local buyers are not allowed access to the B-series mild hybrid option but can choose between T4 front-wheel drive (all-wheel drive) and T5 AWD petrol engines.

Drive understands further electrification options are on the cards for our market.

Petrol-only T4 and T5 powertrains find their European equivalents in the new B4 and B5 systems, pairing a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to develop 145kW/300Nm in the B4 (up to 5kW), or 184kW/350Nm in the B5. (down 1kW).

Drive is sent to the front wheels in the base B4, or to all four wheels in the available B4 AWD and B5 AWD, enabling 0-100km/h in 7.6 seconds in the front-drive B4, 7.4 seconds in the all-paw B4 AWD, and 6.4 seconds on the B5 AWD.

Combined fuel economy ranges between 6.7L/100km (B4) and 7.8L/100km (B5 AWD) – an increase of about one liter per 100 kilometers over the T4 and T5 engines now discontinued in Europe, according to WLTP testing.

European buyers can choose between two Rechargeable plug-in hybrid options, pairing a 1.5-liter turbo three-cylinder engine with a 10.7kWh battery and a small electric motor for a combined output of 155kW/405Nm in the T4, or 192kW/425Nm in the T5.

The electric driving distance is between 45km and 50km.

Two electric models are available, both featuring a 78kWh battery, and 150kW DC fast charging (for 40 minutes of zero to 80 percent charge).

The Single Motor has one 170kW/330Nm electric motor for a WLTP range of 424km and a 0-100km/h time of 7.4 seconds, while the Dual Motor – the only electric variant available in Australia so far – uses two 150kW motors for a combined 300kW/660Nm, a range of 418km, and a 0-100km/h time of 4.9 seconds.

Expect to hear more details of the 2023 Volvo XC40 facelift once it’s revealed in full in the coming days (following the initial announcement in Europe).

A launch in Australia is slated for the beginning of the second half of 2022 (in other words, the third quarter), with local pricing and range details to be announced closer to launch.

2023 Volvo XC40 Spyshot: Is Volvo XC40 A Good Car

Our spy photographer captured a completely undisguised 2023 Volvo XC40 in the wild, showing a slight visual makeover.

What’s interesting is that Volvo has uploaded an image of the facelifted model on its official European page, discreetly launching the model without any public announcement.

However, the US Volvo page is still showing the pre-facelift model.

The front end of the redesigned Volvo XC40 is largely carried over from its newer C40 Recharge coupe-SUV sibling. These include reshaped LED headlights and a new bumper that is more sculpted than before.

The most enclosed grille on the 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge retains the more traditional look of the mild-hybrid and plug-in variants of the 2023 Volvo XC40 as it still has an internal combustion engine.

The profile looks almost identical apart from the new design for the wheels, while the taillights get a slight LED graphic update.

The configurator still has pre-facelifted models on the sporty R-Design trim which will likely be replaced by new “Light” and “Dark” visual packages that change the finishes on the grille, roof rails, and window frames to chrome or glossy black.

Inside, changes are limited to new materials for decorative strips on the dashboard depending on trim levels.

Most importantly, the facelifted 2023 Volvo XC40 benefits from Google-based infotainment on the same 9-inch touchscreen, as seen on Volvo’s Polestar and XC40 Recharge EV models.

At the same time, it retains the ADAS system and Volvo’s signature safety features.

The 2023 Volvo XC40 has been a sales hit for Volvo since its debut in 2017. While the SUV still looks fresh thanks to its modern Scandinavian design approach, five years later it’s time for a mid-life update.

The UK range consists of two mild-hybrid powertrain variants (B3, B4) and two plug-in hybrids (T4, T5) carried over from the pre-facelift model, now available in three trim levels (Core, Plus, Ultimate).

The interior of the recently peeked 2022 Volvo XC40 facelift doesn’t seem to have undergone any major changes. But, the car should come with updated seats and more or less the same features as in its current form.

As a modern Volvo, this luxurious compact SUV will have all the latest safety systems, including those that assist the driver for extended periods.

Interestingly, the brand’s official website for certain regions, especially Europe, has displayed photos of the facelift model even though it has not been officially sold.

In the plug-in hybrid department, the 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge T4 and T5 combine a 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor, for a combined output of 258 hp (192 kW / 262 PS).

Last but not least, there’s the fully electric Recharge 2023 Volvo XC40 with 228 hp (170 kW / 231 PS) from the single electric motor or with 402 hp (300 kW / 408 PS) from the dual electric motors.

In the UK, on-the-road prices start at £34,100 ($46,220) for the B3 FWD, though other European markets get cheaper options.

All variants of the facelifted 2023 Volvo XC40 have a delivery time of 8-9 months meaning that first owners will get their hands on their vehicle before the end of 2022.

With a facelifted version, the new front-wheel-drive 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric has joined the ranks in Europe, with a single 170kW/330Nm electric motor driving the front wheels, with a claimed mileage (WLTP) of 424 kilometers.

Inside, shoppers will be offered sustainably sourced wool or synthetic leather – with Volvo announcing in September that it was dropping natural leather.

It is expected that the 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric’s recent five-star ANCAP safety rating will carry over to the updated model.

A Volvo Australia spokesperson has told Wheels that a 2023 Volvo XC40 is expected in the early second half of 2022, with the final line-up yet to be determined.

Fitted with the same engine and equipped with the top Inscription trim, the XC40 remains very affordable at an estimated $42,000 price tag.
