2023 Volvo S60

2023 Volvo S60 In a segment long dominated by the German brand, Volvo is sliding from the north to take on the famous compact luxury sedan. The Swedish brand S60 made its debut for the 2019 model year, featuring a great look and a luxurious, feature-packed interior.

Now in its third generation, the S60 is offered with a four-cylinder hybrid engine and a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The sedan provided the basis for the V60 station wagon.

  • The T5 and T6 engines are replaced by the B5 and B6. mild-hybrid engines, respectively
  • Wireless device chargers are now standard on R-Design, Inscription, and Polestar trims
  • A new gray paint color replaces the bright Bursting Blue
  • The front fog lamps are removed from the Momentum trim; built-in compass of all trims
  • Minor package content changes

Shortly after we made a bid for our one-year Volvo S60 test car, we started missing it —over 20,000 miles, we became captivated by its style, features, and comfort.

Day trips and long trips are done gracefully, even with a basic powertrain. High-end engines are faster but don’t necessarily improve the driving experience. Granted, the S60’s drive is great but not very sporty.

Volvo’s reputation for safety adds another layer of trust, and the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system works well. While the tablet-like infotainment display may be cool, it’s not always the easiest to use, especially when driving.

Maybe next year the 2023 Volvo S60 will get an Android-based user interface added to the other Volvo models.

Brands other than Volvo might come to mind when considering a compact luxury sedan. But these outliers deserve attention. The 2023 Volvo S60 is attractive, classy, and incredibly comfortable—that is, luxurious.

Other cars may provide more performance and badge stamps, but as a suave everyday sedan, this Swede has found the answer.

2023 Volvo S60 Review

The Volvo S60 2023 Review sedan is more suited to pampering its passengers than accelerating their heartbeat. In a segment defined by cars with extremely sporty driving characteristics and bold engine choices, Volvo takes a different approach.

2023 Volvo S60

The 2023 Volvo S60’s exterior is restrained yet elegant and the interior is one of the best in its class, with a unique Scandinavian aesthetic. While the soft base engine further limits the fun factor, the powertrains of both plug-in hybrids are fast and fuel-efficient.

For maximum entertainment, the Polestar Engineered model is a 415-hp plug-in with the sportiest chassis setup. While it’s more powerful than the twin-turbocharged BMW M340i and Genesis G70, it’s not as aggressive or exciting to drive.

The 2023 Volvo S60 and Volvo S60 Recharge Review also suffers from a frustrating infotainment interface, but other than that it’s a delightful luxury sedan.

  • HIGHEST
Scandinavian-inspired classy cabin, soft and supportive seats, popular and upscale features are standard.
  • LOWEST
The driving experience is less dramatic, the infotainment system is not intuitive, and most of the rivals have a better base engine.
  • DECISION
The 2023 Volvo S60 has a unique style and some desirable features, but sports sedan fans will be disappointed.

For, Volvo revised the trim level of the 2023 Volvo S60 and adjusted certain features. No longer are the designations T5 and T6 used to differentiate powertrain configurations.

Now, B5 is used to identify new single-gas powertrains; models with the T8 Recharge badge continue to denote plug-in hybrids. Momentum and Recharge The R-Design Expression adds a grille, bumper, and window trim to make it look like an R-Design model.

However, they now no longer have power-operated front fog lamps or rear child locks. The rest of the lineup lost the compass in the rearview mirror, but it’s now standard with wireless phone charging.

Lastly, the Advance package adds an enhanced air filtration system. Volvo has discontinued the leather-wrapped key fob and replaced the leather on the steering wheel with a leather-free material.

2023 Volvo S60 Recharge

2023 Volvo S60 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid Review released details about the latest version of its plug-in-hybrid powertrain a few months ago, and it looks like this upgrade will reach the US market of Volvo models shortly.

The 2023 Volvo S60, V60, S90, XC60, and XC90 PHEV models, called Recharge in Volvo’s parlance, will benefit from a more powerful electric motor and larger battery.

Total horsepower will increase to 455 hp and electric driving range will increase by 13 to 16 miles depending on the model, although official EPA ratings are not yet available.

The combination of the 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged turbo engine and the previous electric motor makes 400 horsepower in this hybrid (or 415 hp in the V60 Polestar Engineered), and the extra grunts belong to the more powerful electric motor.

The battery is increased from a total energy capacity of 11.6 kWh to 18.8 kWh (Volvo has not provided any new usable battery capacity) and the estimated power-only range is expected to increase to 38 miles for the V60 and 32 miles for the XC60 and XC90.

Official EPA range estimates haven’t been released yet, but this Volvo Extended Range model is listed on the EPA guidelines for federal tax credits.

Volvo will use the “Extended Range” nomenclature to distinguish models with updated powertrains, although we expect this model to replace existing hybrids.

2023 Volvo S60 Recharge Review we have reached out to Volvo for more information on this change and will update this post as more details become available.

2023 Volvo S60 Redesign

2023 Volvo S60

The new designation for the engine is the B5 (officially T5). The supercharged and turbocharged T6 engines are no longer available, but the top plug-in Recharge T8 hybrid is still an option.

The top model Polestar Engineered is only available with the Recharge T8 powertrain. This is a 2023 Volvo S60 performance model equipped with Ohlins suspension, forged wheels, and Brembo brakes.

The Swedish sedan may not sell as well as some of its competitors — which include the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class — but the 2023 Volvo S60 still has a lot to offer in terms of sophisticated driver assistance and styling.

In addition, the 2023 Volvo S60 provides a comfortable ride thanks to its excellent seat comfort, grip like a true sports sedan, and excellent build quality. For detailed information about the Volvo S60, see our Expert Rating from our test team.

2023 Volvo S60 Interior

Volvo S60 2023 Model showcases exceptional build quality in the 2023 Volvo S60, which features top-class materials overall and exceptional attention to detail. The design is undeniably forward-thinking and full of developments like gem switchgear and incredibly comfortable seats.

Its luxury features include a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, ambient interior lighting, a heads-up display, massaging front seats, and more. Not only are front-seat passengers pampered with a comfortable and supportive bucket, but rear-seat passengers will also appreciate the ample legroom and headroom.

The interior cubby space is highlighted by useful door pockets and a center console that offers a tray with a retractable lid and a handy trash can under the armrest.

We also managed to fit five carry-on luggage in the trunk of the 2023 Volvo S60, one of which is smaller than the 3-series.

Each 2023 Volvo S60 is equipped with a 12.3-inch digital gauge display and a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. The touchscreen runs the older Volvo Census user interface, not the newer Android-based setup added to other Volvo models.

This includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity. The built-in navigation is optional or included depending on the trim.

A 10-speaker audio system is standard, and Volvo offers a premium 14-speaker Harman Kardon or 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system as available upgrades.

The S60 offers plenty of room for long-legged people upfront, but the second row isn’t as wide. However, the passenger size is quite typical for the segment; all pretty close to the Audi A4. However, the large trunk stands out.

  • Cargo space (luggage): S60: 15.6 cubic feet and A4: 12.0 cubic feet
  • Legroom (first/second row): S60: 42.3/35.2 inches and A4: 41.3/37.4 inches
  • Headroom (first/second row): S60: 37.4/37.2 inches and A4: 37.3/37.4 inches

2023 Volvo S60 Engine

The non-hybrid 2023 Volvo S60 has a 260-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired to either front or all-wheel drive.

2023 Volvo S60

Power increases to 400 horsepower on the Recharge all-wheel-drive-only plug-in hybrid, and the most advanced Recharge Polestar Engineered is even sportier.

The latter produces 415 horsepower and 494 pound-feet of torque. Together with adaptive dampers and exclusive 19-inch alloy wheels, the Polestar edition is only available as part of a Care by Volvo subscription plan.

While driving one of the higher-spec 2023 Volvo S60 trim levels, we were very impressed with how well it was handled. The steering proves to be fast and precise along the winding roads, and there is excellent cornering grip.

However, during comparison tests against four-cylinder rivals, the more basic 2023 Volvo S60 model finished last due to its quieter driving nature versus sportier alternatives like the Alfa Romeo Giulia and the BMW 3-series.
