Apart from the Subaru Outback, it seems that the station wagon body style is only in the luxury realm, with rivals including the Audi A4 Allroad, Mercedes-Benz E-class All-Terrain, and Volvo’s larger V90 Cross Country.
The biggest news for 2022 is that Volvo has decided to ditch the regular 2023 Volvo V60 station wagon, leaving the rugged Cross Country model and the sporty T8 Polestar Recharge model as the only options.
Wireless phone charging is now standard, and the car’s semi-autonomous driving mode is now bundled along with a heads-up display, 360-degree camera system, air purifier, and more in the new Advanced package.
The Climate Package includes heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and headlight washers. The power-operated rear liftgate is now optional.
The plug-in hybrid Recharge model gets a more powerful electric motor and a larger battery that extends the wagon’s all-electric driving range to 38 miles.
2023 Volvo V60 Review: New Volvo V60 2023
When sedans aren’t enough and SUVs are too many, the 2023 Volvo V60 presents an interesting solution.
This station wagon is based on the Volvo S60 luxury compact sedan but has a long roof and an enlarged cargo area that makes it almost as practical as the XC60 brand’s compact SUV.
Wagons have been a hallmark of Volvo for decades, and this generation of V60 debuted in 2019. Tragically slow sales have led to a decline in the lineup for 2022.

These two compact station wagon variants cover a wide spectrum, each equipped with a great look and lots of luxury features.
On the one hand, we have the Polestar Engineered 2023 Volvo V60 T8, which packs a plug-in hybrid powertrain that allows for fast acceleration and a reasonable electric range.
It’s a quirky, cool, and unique offering among sporty compact luxury cars, but we can’t say it’s competitive considering its performance and price. We appreciate that it exists, but the numbers are not the same.
On the other hand, we get the 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country, which is chasing an SUV with a high-riding suspension and tough-looking body cladding.
Standard all-wheel drive gives the 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country reasonable all-terrain capability, but it’s only available with Volvo’s base T5 powertrain — which isn’t very fast.
Nevertheless, it is a stylish solution for drivers looking for something different.
Yet those drivers seem to be few and far between. Sales figures for the 2023 Volvo V60 pale in comparison to SUVs, and Volvo has canceled every variant other than the Polestar and Cross Country for 2022—making rare vehicles even rarer.
For all the things a cart can do, selling like hotcakes is not one of them. That’s a shame, given the 2023 Volvo V60’s diverse capabilities and appeal.
Volvo V60 2023 Changes: Is The Volvo V60 A Good Car
Volvo has never shied away from doing something a little different, and that’s true with its approach to performance cars. Case in point: 2023 Volvo V60 Polestar Engineered.
This sporty wagon uses an updated version of the Volvo T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain, which combines a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter I-4 engine that powers the front wheels, and an electric motor that rotates the rear, for 415 hp and 494 lb. – total legs.
Although the estimated 0-60-mph time is around 4.5 seconds, the fuel economy is quite high. It’s rated at 30 mpg or 69 mpg-e city/highway combined and can travel 22 miles on a full battery charge.
Trick manually adjustable suspension, big brakes, and skinny wheels comprise other performance enhancements.

Volvo has long used the Cross Country designation on its station wagons strapped to a suspension that increases ride height and all-wheel drive, which is the treatment the 2023 Volvo V60 receives in its crossover-aping transformation.
A bit of black body cladding completes the look, and the available plaid fabric upholstery is a delight. It is offered only with a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 T5 powertrain, which sends 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
We estimate a 0-60-mph time of 8.0 seconds and a fuel economy rate of 22/31 mpg city/highway.
Handling like a car feels great compared to high-end SUVs, and is just as stylish and luxurious as the other S60 variants. We think the 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country makes an attractive, albeit expensive, SUV alternative.
Like its sedan counterpart, the 2023 Volvo V60 has earned historically high safety scores. The V60 has earned an NHTSA five-star overall rating and a 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation, both of which are the highest designations of the body.
Standard driver assistance and active safety features include front and rear automatic emergency braking, fixed lane assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear traffic warning, and automatic high light and windshield wipers.
Adaptive cruise control and enhanced lane keep assist, which Volvo calls Pilot Assist, are standard on the 2023 Volvo V60 Polestar Engineered and optional in Cross Country.

2023 Volvo V60 Interior
Volvo designed some great interiors, and the 2023 Volvo V60 is no exception, largely imitating the S60 sedan and XC60 SUV. The cabin is spacious, the seats are comfortable, and the design is unquestionably upscale.
But Volvo’s minimalist approach means that a lot of the controls are hidden within the infotainment system. Like other vintage Volvos, the cabin looks and feels more expensive than the original, which makes it even more impressive.
Cargo capacity is also large, something we expect from a station wagon. In our tests, we put eight carry-on luggage behind the rear seats and a total of 22 luggage with the seats folded.
For reference, the Audi A4 Allroad carried two fewer pieces of luggage in both tests.
We’ve experienced significant—and very annoying—downtime with the Volvo Census infotainment system, especially in the first few minutes after starting the car.
Until the screen is active, you cannot adjust climate control, set a destination in the navigation, or change radio stations.
However, once it happened, it was smooth. The simple and intuitive nature of the interface makes it easy to operate while driving, so you can take the good with the bad.
Don’t just assume an SUV is more practical than a wagon. The 2023 Volvo V60 trades the edge with its similarly sized stablemate, the XC60 compact crossover.

The Cross Country model is powered by a 250-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine and is equipped with all-wheel drive. When we tested the T5’s powertrain, we found it to be a solid performance, with a 60-mph time of 6.4 seconds.
As long as you don’t push too hard, the 2023 Volvo V60 feels agile and responsive when cornering. The Recharge Polestar T8 features a 455-hp plug-in-hybrid powertrain that pairs a turbo and supercharged four-cylinder with an electric motor and all-wheel drive.
This setup is much faster than the T5 model, jumping to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. The Recharge T8 Polestar is also equipped with a manually adjustable suspension—something that driving enthusiasts might find cool—so the owner can adjust the car’s driving behavior to their liking.

The 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country is back. The raised Volvo V60 wagon features all-wheel drive (AWD) and is seen as part of the brand’s steadfast car real estate philosophy, which has been around for decades.
The 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country replaces the standard 2023 Volvo V60 in the Volvo lineup and offers an alternative to the philosophical XC60 SUV, not to mention a premium branded alternative to the Subaru Outback.
This car is only available in one specification – B5. If you cross the Volvo nomenclature, you’ll notice that the brand used to have the prefix D and T, but the B stands for battery, as it’s a mild hybrid version of the existing T5 powertrain.
As of mid-2021, Volvo has been selling 2023 Volvo V60 wagons, which don’t look as rugged as you can see here. It’s sleek and trim, while this one looks like it’s been going to the gym and getting ready for a week’s worth of mountain climbing.
It has distinguishable Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, the face of the Volvo brand family, and you’ll know exactly what you’re looking at, be it front, side, or rear.
The branding is a bit more subtle with its implementation of the Cross Country branding this time around, though – it’s just embossed onto the unfinished plastic part of the rear bumper.
The black plastic stretches around the bottom lip of the car, adds a bit of flair above the wheel arches, and acts as a kind of bash plate at the front. It sits on a higher suspension setup, too, to allow for slightly better capability when it comes to off-road adventures.
You also get 19-inch wheels clad in Continental tires, and there are roof rails for mounting on a roof rack or cargo box (which I’ll be doing… more on that later).
The interior of the 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country is very similar to what you’d see in other Volvo products – classy, well-appointed for the most part, and has some design flair, including brushed aluminum-look trim, and wood finish on the dashboard.
It might not be as extensive as you might think for a Volvo wagon that’s meant for families.
It measures 4784mm long, 1893mm wide, and 1504mm high, so this is no small car. And on paper, you might think that the boot capacity – stated 529 liters – would be a lot.
But in reality, for families with small children or infants (like me, I have a six-month-old), it might be a little limited in terms of cargo space. I managed to get our bassinet and stroller in, with almost no free space.
You can tuck in suitcases and a folding stroller without obscuring your rearview, but don’t expect that you’ll be able to load a week’s worth of luggage for the family and still be able to see out the windshield.
If I was looking for a 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country for my family, I would consider adding a Roof Box accessory.
This luggage pod was designed by Volvo Cars and includes LED interior lights, so it’s not just a plastic shell. Plus it adds an extra 430 liters of luggage capacity, and it looks amazing too.
In terms of interior passenger space, the rear seats are roomy enough for me (182cm/6’0”) to sit behind my driving position with very little free space. The amenities are good at the rear, with air vents at the pillars and at knee height, and there is also climate control and a fan at the rear.
Rear occupants get a map pocket, door pocket with bottle holder, a fold-down armrest with cup holder and storage case, as well as a ski stand.
There’s an ISOFIX point on the outboard seat, and the top three tether points too.
I installed the capsule facing the back. A few things to note: the gap under the headrest is pretty tight, so sorting the straps might be a little more difficult than you’d expect. Also, the size of that headrest means that the installation of the travel mirror is also a bit tricky.
I managed to sit in front of the baby capsule with enough legroom to be comfortable for a ride of about an hour, and the scalloped shape of the dashboard helps with that. Smaller front seat passengers will be fine, but those with long legs may find it cramped.
The front seat space for the most part is very good. The center console/around the transmission tunnel is carpeted, meaning you don’t hit your knees against hard plastic. I like it.
There’s a hidden cup holder with a neat sliding top, a cordless phone charging pad, a closed armrest console holder, and a bottle holder on the door.
The technology is good. It doesn’t lead the segment in terms of screen size, and some might question the ease of use of a tablet-style screen, but I like it.
The 9.0-inch multimedia touchscreen quickly responds to commands. Like tablets, there is a button at the bottom to return to the home screen, and you can swipe the screen left or right to open different menus.
It takes a little while to get the hang of it and to understand where the different menus lie for the different commands.
My main gripe about the screen layout is that – even though Apple CarPlay is supported – it looks so tiny on the screen! Close enough to distinguish icons and touch them easily enough, but leaving home screen elements above and below does make for a less appealing experience.
And while I usually hate cars that don’t have physical control for the AC temperature, the one on the Volvo is easy to use.

Each V60 has a 12.3-inch digital gauge display and a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. Unlike other Volvo 2022 models, the V60 doesn’t get Volvo’s latest Android-based user interface, so the older Census settings carry over.
That includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and built-in navigation. The 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country has a 10-speaker audio system, while the Polestar Engineered enjoys a premium Bowers & Wilkins 15-speaker setup.

Fuel consumption is expressed as 7.4 liters per 100 kilometers on the combined cycle.
My test – which combines highway, freeway, urban, and some light off-road driving – saw the real world at 8.6L/100km fuel pump return. OK, but not great. The fuel tank capacity is 60 liters and requires 95RON premium unleaded fuel.

The list price for the 2023 Volvo V60 Cross Country is $64,990 plus on-road fees (MSRP). That’s pretty decent considering you get leather upholstery trim, electric seat adjustments, LED lighting, 19-inch wheels, all the safety gear, and all-wheel drive.
Volvo has noticed recent reviews criticizing the brand’s excessive servicing costs, with the company now offering a choice of service plans – three years/45,000km for $1500, or five years/75,000km for $2500. That’s a great price for a luxury brand.
And there’s an unlimited five-year/km warranty with the same cover for roadside assistance, and the B5 mild hybrid battery pack is covered by an eight-year warranty.
