2023 Volvo V90

2023 Volvo V90 perhaps the most Volvo vehicle in the Swedish automaker’s modern lineup, the V90 Cross Country is a supremely luxurious wagon. Despite being a stylish, secure and technology-laden package, the 2023 Volvo V90 experienced sales low enough to become a bespoke model only. Additionally, it is only offered in the high-riding Cross Country configuration. The V90 Cross Country competes directly with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All Terrain and the Audi A6 Allroad.

We’re blown away by the Volvo V90 Cross Country every time we get behind the wheel. The large style of the wagon body makes it very practical for comfortably transporting passengers or for storing a ton of cargo. The minimalist style interior also uses a lot of high quality materials.

Volvo equips every V90 Cross Country with a mild-hybrid B6 drivetrain that’s smooth but delivers only hefty fuel economy. All-wheel drive is standard, and with the aid of a raised suspension setup, the V90 Cross Country is quite capable in light off-road scenarios.

The addition of Volvo’s new Google-based infotainment system enhances the connectivity of the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country with the inclusion of the Google Play app store, Google Assistant voice recognition technology, Google Maps navigation and over-the-air update capabilities. However, we expect the new system to represent a much bigger step forward in terms of ease of use over the previous generation’s user interface. Maybe a system update and a bigger screen in a future model will help.

Apart from that, another weakness of the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country is a somewhat stiff ride and a slightly noisy cabin. Even so, the lift wagon remains a rare and stylish alternative to the luxury crossovers that are far more prevalent today.

  • Updated shift logic
  • Trim levels renamed Plus and Ultimate
  • Fresh wheel design
  • Updated paint color
  • Wireless charging is no longer available
  • Stylish executive wagon
  • High quality and well designed interior
  • Strong security rating

2023 Volvo V90 Review

Volvo didn’t invent the station wagon, but its boxy people carriers from the 1980s and 1990s retained the bodystyle of the SUV era. Their modern analogue, the 2023 V90 Cross Country, is one of the few remaining station wagons on sale today and deftly mixes traditional longroof styling, elevated ride height and luxurious cabin trim to maintain its place at the top. brand lineup alongside the flagship SUV XC90 .

Rival luxury wagons such as the Audi A6 Allroad and Mercedes-Benz E450 All-Terrain follow a similar formula, but neither can match the V90’s Scandinavian appeal. All-wheel drive is standard, as is the 295-hp engine, and the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country’s extra ground clearance means it can cruise tough trails—though we stopped short of taking the truly unbeatable.

Like other Volvo models, including the smaller but similar V60 Cross Country, the 2023 Volvo V90 comes standard with many driver assistance features including an adaptive cruise control system with lane centering and an automatic emergency braking system with pedestrian detection.

  • HIGHEST
Tasteful exterior styling, upscale looking interior, more cargo-friendly than a sedan.
  • LOWEST
The Pseudo-SUV’s ride height gives it a truck-like feel, the infotainment icons are too small, not as fast as its rival station wagons.
  • ALLEGATIONS
If you’re okay with its not-so-SUV status, the V90 Cross Country offers a premium cargo-friendly package with polished curb appeal.

The V90 Cross Country adopts Volvo’s new Plus and Ultimate trim levels this year. Three new exterior colors also join the palette: Black Stone, Bright Dusk Metallic and Silver Dawn Metallic. The Volvo V90 Cross Country is a unique luxury wagon with a luxurious interior, excellent safety ratings and a bit of off-road capability. Prices start at $58,450.

The popularity of SUVs overtook the station wagon long ago, but that doesn’t mean the luxury wagon is dead. The Volvo V90 Cross Country is a unique luxury car with the versatility of an SUV and the driving dynamics of a sedan. It also carries the brand’s reputation for safety with the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation.

With standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and 8.3 inches of ground clearance, this wagon can handle almost any road condition and even venture off-road. The V90 Cross Country has two main competitors, and both are more expensive: the Audi A6 Allroad and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain Wagon.

2023 Volvo V90 Interior, Comfort and Cargo

Other than Mercedes-Benz, no company does luxury interiors better than Volvo. The Swedish brand’s warm and comfortable cabins offer an attractive argument for the premium price of the carriages.

They offer high-quality trimmings, elegant designs and substantive technology. The two-tone leather on the steering wheel, textured knobs, beautiful open porous wood, beautiful speaker enclosures and a vertically oriented tablet-style infotainment screen all help to separate the Volvo vehicle from the pack. As with most carriages, the V90 Cross Country offers ample interior space.

However, it’s not as efficient in the cargo-carrying department as Mercedes. Nor can it beat the sub-luxury Subaru Outback in the area. Mercedes and Subaru both carry more carry-on luggage behind the back seats than a Volvo. With all seats folded, the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country holds 21 crates while the Outback has room for 22 and the E-class.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country comes with a 12.3-inch digital meter display and a vertically oriented 9.0-inch center touchscreen which includes features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. Navigation, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, and in-car Wi-Fi are also standard.

The new Google-based infotainment interface looks nice and is more responsive than the Sensus Connect system from the previous model year, but the smaller screen icons are harder to hit accurately while driving.

2023 Volvo V90 MPG and Real World Fuel

Due to its small displacement, forced induction engine, the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country has one of the highest EPA fuel economy ratings in the luxury train segment. The EPA says a V90 Cross Country with the new B6 powertrain should get 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. On our 75 mph fuel-efficient test route, the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country produced 28 mpg. For more information on the V90 Cross Country’s fuel economy, visit the EPA website.

Performance and Fuel Efficiency

Only one drivetrain configuration is available for the 2023 V90 Cross Country: the turbocharged and supercharged inline four-cylinder engine with mild hybrid assistance sends power to the all-wheel drive system via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

This setup produces a total of 295 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. In our tests, those performance numbers were good for a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 6.9 seconds. The EPA rates the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country’s fuel economy at 22/29 mpg city/highway.

2023 Volvo V90 Engine, Transmission and Performance

The B6’s engine is a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a 48-volt hybrid system that produces 295 horsepower. It accelerates fairly quickly and the big Volvo car managed a 6.4-second run to 60 mph on our test track. The E450 All-Terrain proves to be even faster, accelerating to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

While the 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country doesn’t feel particularly sporty, it is agile and offers impressive cornering capabilities. However, the ride is tougher than we would expect from a large luxury car. The brakes are firm despite a springy pedal feel, and in our 70 to 0 mph braking test, the V90 Cross Country stopped at 168 feet.
