2023 Volvo XC60

2023 Volvo XC60 the German automaker has dominated the luxury SUV market for a long time. While these vehicles have carved a niche in their class, certain similarities tie them all together. For those looking to break the mold, there are several options, and the 2023 Volvo XC60 is one of them.

The 2023 Volvo XC60 stands out from the rest of the class with its unique Scandinavian design. Its clean, almost minimal exterior styling can never be mistaken for a BMW or a Benz. Inside, a sophisticated cabin can be selected with several unique upholstery options, including a very attractive wool blend material. There are also several engine options, from an economical mild hybrid to a powerful plug-in hybrid that can travel up to 35 miles on battery power alone.

Since the XC60 is a Volvo, safety plays a big role. You get all the advanced safety features expected as standard equipment, while an excellent crash test score provides further assurance. It has even been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. For 2023, trim levels have been renamed and features have been slightly revised. Plug-in hybrid models also get more EV power and range.

Overall, the 2023 Volvo XC60 is an attractive and stylish alternative to the established BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. It’s not as exciting to drive, at least in the mild hybrid range, but if you’re in the market for a family-friendly vehicle, it’s probably not a big deal. There’s also the cheeky Genesis GV70, representing the value leader in its segment. If you’re considering any of these vehicles, you should take a closer look at the 2023 Volvo XC60, especially the plug-in hybrid Recharge variant.

  • Elegant interior design
  • The second row of seats is spacious
  • Many standard security technology features
  • Available as a plug-in hybrid

2023 Volvo XC60 Review

Elegant design and deliberate engineering combine in the 2023 Volvo XC60, and the result is a signature choice in the luxury SUV class. Along with its tastefully appointed exterior, the XC60’s cabin is an exercise in well-designed minimalism think Prada meets IKEA. A trio of four-cylinder powertrains is on offer the 247-hp B5, 295-hp B6, and 455-hp T8 plug-in hybrid. It’s all reasonably fuel efficient and feels good from behind the wheel, with performance that ranges from dashing to insanely fast depending on which powertrain you choose.

Technology also takes priority; Volvo includes popular driver assistance and safety features as standard. We didn’t like the XC60’s Google-based infotainment interface, but it works well enough even if it doesn’t look as appealing. Other compact SUVs are more practical, notably the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, both of which offer more cargo space. But the Volvo’s interior space isn’t far off, and its rugged appeal makes up for this minor flaw.

Gone are the Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription trim levels Volvo is familiar with for 2023, replaced by the essentially identical Core, Plus, and Ultimate trims. The Core and models can be had with a Light or Dark exterior theme, the latter replacing the exterior chrome bits with shiny black ones. New wheel designs are available and some features have been scrambled, such as air suspension, which is now only available on the Ultimate trim. Two new colors are available, Black Stone and Bright Dusk Metallic, and the Blond City Weave fabric and Slate Nappa leather upholstery have both been removed.

The current-generation 2023 Volvo XC60, which sits between the subcompact XC40 and the three-row XC90 in Volvo’s SUV lineup, arrives for the 2018 model year and has received a significant refresh over its lifetime. Recently, the 2023 Volvo XC60 received a significant update with a new powertrain, technology, and styling. Now, that continues into 2023 with more changes that will keep the XC60 lineup competitive in a very competitive segment.

  • The responsive mild hybrid engine
  • Attractive exterior styling
  • Strong security rating
  • Updated shift logic for all models
  • The T8 plug-in hybrid model can ride with one pedal
  • The extended-range refill option introduced at the end of the 2022 model year is now standard
  • Trim levels renamed Core, Plus, and Ultimate
  • The exterior trim and fascia theme was separated from the trim levels and renamed Base, Bright, and Dark
  • Updated paint color
  • Updated upholstery options
  • Wireless charging stopped

New Upgrade Volvo XC60 2023

The 2023 Volvo XC60 has a lot to offer, from ample space for adults in both rows to above-average cargo capacity. It also offers a relaxed ride, but some of the competitors are more interesting to drive. The XC60 may have debuted in 2018, but we still have a lot of good things to say about this compact crossover. For starters, the beautiful design still looks fresh thanks to the latest updates. Also, while the interior is showing signs of aging compared to newer rivals, we still find the minimalistic cabin design appealing.

The 2023 Volvo XC60’s driving dynamics are a bit mixed up. Passengers generally ride comfortably, although the larger wheels do take a toll on ride quality. The available Volvo air suspension makes the XC60 feel a little softer, even on 21-inch wheels. The mild hybrid drivetrain is refined and provides smooth shifting, but power and efficiency could be improved.

In our First Test of the 2022 XC60 B6, we found that the compact crossover lags in its segment in outright performance, despite the pleasant driving manner. That’s not quite the case for the T8’s flagship plug-in hybrid model. We’ve been critical of the way the T8 generates power (as well as the feel of its brakes), but the updated 2023 model’s shift logic could sort out some of that.

Another fresh change comes from inside the cabin. We hope that the new Android-based infotainment system will fix our complaints with the previous setup. While we’ve for the most part had a positive experience with the new interface, a few bugs have surfaced that leave us wanting to refine it a little more. With additional tweaks, the 2023 Volvo XC60 could be a truly powerful luxury compact crossover. For now, it remains a solid choice that sits near the top of the segment.

2023 Volvo XC60 Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

With interior styling and rich materials that mirror those of more expensive Volvos, the 2023 Volvo XC60 is like having a claddkaka and eating it too. The quiet and comfortable cabins also provide adult-sized accommodation on both rows. Clean lines and high-quality materials add a distinctly Scandinavian flavor to the XC60’s cabin and we expect nothing less from a modern Volvo.

Decent cargo-carrying capabilities put the 2023 Volvo XC60 mid-pack among its competitors in our tests; with the back seats folded, we loaded up our 20 hand luggage. However, interior cubby storage is limited, and the lone cargo hold is the smallest we’ve ever measured.

Interior volume for passengers is better than other compact crossovers, but cargo space is smaller compared to segment stalwarts like the BMW X3 and Genesis GV70 SUV of the Year winner. The interior of our 2023 Volvo XC60 also has a flair for style. Choose between interior colors like Charcoal, Amber, Maroon Brown, and Blond.

Each blends beautifully with the modern look and driftwood décor to create a stylish cabin space. Find a Volvo vehicle that fits your budget and preferences at Volvo Cars Tampa. Dive deep into the interior of our Volvo XC60 in detail with our vehicle experts and take control of this luxury SUV.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All 2023 Volvo XC60 models come with a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment screen that runs Volvo’s latest Google-based software interface. The system provides several personalization options and offers voice control via Google Assistant.

We’ve found the software’s interface to respond quickly, but the menus take some getting used to. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, as is Bluetooth connectivity and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot supported by a 4G LTE data connection.

Technology

Volvo equips a 9.0-inch touchscreen with a Google-based interface in every 2023 Volvo XC60. Features include Apple CarPlay, Google Maps navigation, access to the Google Play app store, Google Assistant voice commands, and over-the-air update capabilities. A 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and two front-row USB-C ports are also standard. Volvo also offers a head-up view and 360-degree camera system on higher trim levels.

A 10-speaker audio system is standard, but Volvo is making 14-speaker Bowers & Wilkins setups and 15-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio available on higher trims.

2023 Volvo XC60 Engine and Transmission

Volvo offers three different powertrains B5, B6, and T8 in the 2023 Volvo XC60, all mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Under the hood of the basic B5-badged XC60 sits a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 48-volt hybrid system that produces 247 horsepower. The B6 is powered by the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine as the B5, but a supercharger has been added for more power.

With 295 bangs in its cage, it feels fresher than the model based on the B5. The plug-in T8 hybrid powertrain borrows the B6 engine and pairs it with a set of electric motors for a total of 455 horsepower in the Recharge model. The 2023 Volvo XC60 takes corners well, feels bonded to the road as it goes, and changes direction confidently, but doesn’t inspire hooliganism like the Porsche Macan. The ride can feel a little rough riding on rougher roads, but on the smooth sections, it’s comfortable and quiet.

Performance and Fuel Efficiency

Every Volvo 2023 Volvo XC60 drivetrain incorporates several elements of electrification. The B5 and B6 units are mild hybrids using an integrated starter generator connected to a 48-volt battery that is charged via a two-stage energy-brake recapture system. The T8’s plug-in hybrid lineup remains the most powerful setup available.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

Using the Recharge or Polestar models makes the T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain standard, which brings an estimated electric-only range of 32 miles. The XC60 T8 can be charged at a public charging station or at home via a 110 or 220-volt outlet, but Volvo has also provided the handy feature of draining the battery with energy generated from the SUV’s gasoline engine when needed.

2023 Volvo XC60 MPG and Real World Fuel

The EPA estimates that the front-wheel drive B5 model should produce 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. The more powerful B6 carries a city rating of 21 mpg and 27 mpg highway. For more information on the XC60’s fuel economy, visit the EPA website.

2023 Volvo XC60 Powertrain

Three powertrains are available for our new midsize luxury SUV. Choose between our available options for FWD and AWD; mild hybrid technology supports each. The B5 FWD and B5 AWD powertrains are available on the Core and trims, and the Ultimate trim adds the B6 AWD as an option.

Stylistically, the Plus and Ultimate trims offer two themes that match your exterior and interior colors. Opt for the standard Bright trim and enjoy a shinier finish with chrome accents around the frame. The Dark Theme features glossy black details on the mirrors and around the front grille. If you prefer a darker exterior like Onyx Black, Black Stone, or Thunder Grey, we like how the Dark theme complements those paint colors.

2023 Volvo XC60 Release Date

This highly durable and reliable SUV model is available with a variety of powertrain options and eco-friendly interior materials. 2023 Volvo XC60 Price

We enjoyed the T6’s fresh 316-hp powertrain performance in our long-term 2019 XC60 test vehicle, so the similar 295-hp B6 Plus is a buy we’d recommend. The extra cost versus the base Core trim is worth it here, with all sorts of features coming standard. Trim Plus comes with prettier wheels, leather upholstery, a 360-degree camera system, and front and rear parking sensors.

  • Core $44,545
  • Plus $48,795
  • Ultimate $54,595
  • Recharge $58,295
  • Recharge Plus $62,545
  • Recharge Ultimate $68,045
  • Recharge Polestar Engineered $75,245

Verdict

The 2023 XC60 is a fine SUV. The XC60 feels energetic regardless of which powertrain you use, and it rides suitably on tough roads. This luxury crossover also has enough space for four adults to get a comfortable sitting position in the high-end interior. You just need to get used to its annoying infotainment controls. The XC60 should be on your shortlist if you’re shopping for a luxury compact SUV. The aforementioned qualities and average base price make it a great value. But those who want more athleticism should look at the BMW X3 or Audi Q5.
