The drivetrain layout on the 2024 Volvo XC40 is rear-wheel drive (RWD) making a comeback after 25 years. Volvo in the ‘Single Motor RWD’ and ‘Single Motor Extended Range RWD’ variants has revealed the EPA-est which also includes the ‘Twin Motor AWD’ variant.
At this point, the RWD Single-Motor Variant has one rear motor developing 175 kW (235 hp) of power and 420 Nm (310 lb.-ft.)* of torque. The Single-Motor Extended Range RWD variant uses a more robust rear motor that develops 185 kW (248 hp) of power and 420 Nm (310 lb.-ft.)* of torque.
The Twin Motor AWD variant combines a 117 kW asynchronous motor at the front and a 183 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor at the rear. Together, these motors produce the 2024 XC40 Recharge and 2024 C40 Recharge 300 kW (402 hp)* and 670 Nm (494 lb.-ft.)* of torque.
This combined recharge using a 150 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor produces a total power of 402 hp (both models) and 486 lb.-ft. (XC40 Refill)/487 lb.-ft. (C40 Recharge) torque.
Longer Range
The main aim behind this update is to extend the reach and increase the recharging speed of the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge. Starting with the range, Volvo Cars has taken the 67 kWh (net) battery pack and replaced the 75 kWh (net) battery pack with a 78 kWh (net) battery pack.
The company doesn’t offer the 67 kWh unit in the US in either of the two models at this time but has disclosed the EPA-est. numbers range with the same in the MY2024 change announcement, indicating the upcoming introduction.

Faster Charging
Volvo Cars have increased the maximum DC fast charge rate of the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge by 50 kW to 200 kW. However, the 200 kW rate does not apply to the Single-Motor RWD variant.
The base variant with a 67 kWh battery pack has a lower maximum DC fast charge input of 150 kW. However, both EVs, in all three variants, require the same amount of time for a 10-80% DC fast charge session – 27 minutes*.
The 2023 XC40 Recharge Twin Motor AWD and the 2023 C40 Recharge Twin Motor AWD, which share a 75 kWh battery pack and a peak DC fast charge rate of 150 kW, take 37 minutes to charge from 10 to 80% SoC on a DC fast-charger.
