The updated model will hit local showrooms around the middle of the year. The cosmetic changes are mostly limited to concealing the rear exhaust outlet.

Volvo has slashed its lineup of 60 series passenger cars since the launch of the current generation in 2019.

At launch, Volvo offered four different variants of the S60 and four V60s, including each of the most superior versions of the T8 plug-in hybrid.

The T8 was the first to go, dropping in 2020. The V60 train was discontinued in 2021, though it was replaced by a single V60 Cross Country variant.

Finally, for 2022 Volvo is trimming the S60 range to a single B5 Inscription variant.

This echoes similar reductions from Volvo’s flagship 2023 Volvo S90 and V90 models. You can no longer buy any of these in Australia, with the last used V90 Cross Country in 2021.

Globally, Volvo has been committed to continuing to offer passenger cars, even as the SUV body style has become a favorite with Volvo buyers.

Volvo sold only 168 S60s in Australia in 2021, with the late-arriving V60 Cross Country recording 148 sales. Only 14 V60s were sold.

2023 Volvo S90 Redesign

Volvo held a dealer conference in Miami on Wednesday and told about 800 attendees all about its plans for the near future including seven new electric vehicles of which five will be all-electric.

They also detailed the plans to increase production and what kind of technology will go into this new vehicle.

Speaking to Autonews, an unnamed source who said they were at the conference laid out many of the brand’s aspirations, and they are centered around electrification of the entire lineup by 2030.

The first all-electric product should resemble the Rechargeable Concept launched in 2021 and could go into production later this year for the 2023 model year.

According to the source, Volvo told dealers that it hopes to sell 20,000 units of the upcoming SUV every year.

That’s just the tip of the EV iceberg as Volvo has another crossover known internally as the V546 which they hope will sell around 100,000 units annually. Positioned between the XC60 and XC90, it’s slated for production sometime in 2025.

It is also important as it will be built in the brand’s South Carolina production facility. Project V546 will be the third EV to be factory-built by the time it arrives in 2025. Before that, the Polestar 3 and the Concept Recharge-inspired EV will go into production in 2023.

Volvo also revealed that an electric version of the XC60 and a new vehicle to be placed under the XC40 are in the works; in addition, it showed off a redesigned plug-in hybrid version of the 2023 Volvo S90 and XC90.

To address all of these new plans, Volvo will use the necessary “ambitious hiring plan” as the South Carolina production facility is currently operating well below its annual capacity.

According to the same source, Volvo is also highlighting its upcoming “Hands-free, eyes-off” Ride Pilot driving technology. The system uses more than 24 sensors including LiDAR and ultrasonics to help AI understand the world around it.

It’s being tested this year in California and we expect to see it as a subscription-based feature offered first on the upcoming flagship electric SUV.

With the new 295-hp B6 mild-hybrid powertrain under the hood, the 2023 Volvo S90 delivered a solid zero to 60-mph time of 6.4 seconds in our tests. Even though it’s slightly slower than the previous T6 model, the low-end torque hybrid powertrain and responsive eight-speed automatic transmission help maintain that great car feels.

The plug-in hybrid Recharge version rolled into our test track, matching the six-cylinder BMW 540i xDrive(4.5 seconds) in our test from zero to 60 mph, but down the road, we noticed some occasional hiccups while driving the plug-in powertrain.

Give the 2023 Volvo S90 gas pedal a sharp input and there’s a momentary delay, followed by a sudden moment of acceleration as the gasoline engine works to help the electric motor. The handling is sure, but the trade-off is the ride barely feels like terry cloth.

The rough stretch of road transmits more vibrations into the cab than in the softer competitors. The steering feels heavy, but not as direct or precise as it should be, which erodes the 2023 Volvo S90’s athletic perception.

Models equipped with the B6 powertrain receive EPA fuel economy ratings of 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway while the Recharge hybrid models receive ratings as high as 66 MPGe combined.

The R-Design and Inscription models are more luxurious, but we’d choose the Momentum for its value equation, as it’s well equipped for the money and the B6’s mild-hybrid setup is much faster and fairly fuel-efficient.
